Ted was brought into the centre on 7th November in a very sorry state. He was very small (weighing just 344 grams), extremely cold and suffering from diarrhoea. Ted was far too small for a hedgehog in November. (A hedgehog needs to weigh at least 700 grams, well over 1 lb. to be able to survive the winter). Tests revealed that Ted was suffering from a very severe case of worms. We immediately set to work treating Ted by starting him on worming medication.
Ted now weighs 420 grams, however he will not reach sufficient weight to be released before the winter so he will go to a foster family who will care for him during the winter in a hutch. This arrangement creates room at the centre for more seriously ill hedgehogs.
When the weather is milder and he has gained enough weight Ted will be released back into the wild near the area where he was found.
