Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre
HEDGEHOG STORIES: SNAIL
Snail is a female juvenile hedgehog that was brought into the centre after being found out during the daytime in the St. Martins area. (Hedgehogs are nocturnal and should not be out during the day, if they are it is a sign that something is wrong).

Upon arrival at the centre Snail only weighed 280g, which meant she was far too small to survive hibernation. (A hedgehog needs to weigh at least 700 grams, well over 1 lb. to be able to survive the winter). She was also quite lethargic.

We have wormed Snail (as we routinely do with all hedgehogs that come into the centre) and she is responding very well to treatment. Unfortunately Snail will not gain sufficient weight in time to be released before the winter so she will remain at the centre until next spring.

Next spring when the weather is milder and she has gained enough weight Snail will be released back into the area where she was found.
