Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre
HEDGEHOG STORIES: SARAH
Sarah is a very old female hedgehog who was brought into the centre on 10th October 2005. She was found out in the daytime and had very severe mange, flyblow and maggots. She was dehydrated and suffering from pneumonia leaving her breathing very laboured. She weighed 624 grams.

We administered antibiotics and painkillers and then gave her a fungal bath to remove the mange and enable us to remove the maggots underneath. We put her on a heatpad but did not expect her to make it through the night. To our surprise she stayed with us. We continued her treatment; worming her twice (as the infestation was so bad) and giving her further courses of antibiotics (she has had three long courses in total now). During her treatment she has lost weight (at one point her weight dropped to 438 grams).

Sarah will remain with us at the centre for some time to come. Although her weight has increased to 510 grams she is still quite frail and moves about very slowly.
