Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre
HEDGEHOG STORIES: RACHEL
Rachel is a female hoglet that was brought into the centre on Thursday 3rd August. She had been found out in the daytime, a sign that a hedgehog is unwell.

When Rachel arrived at the centre she was in a very poor condition. She was shaking terribly, could not walk and was very dehydrated. Her gums were white, she had fly strike on her and she was very lethargic. Also her spines were lying flat against her body which is another sign that a hedgehog is very unwell. She weighed just 212 grams.

We took a faeces sample from Rachel and analysed it under a microscope. The sample contained blood and showed that she was suffering from a severe worm infestation.

We immediately started Rachel on a course of antibiotics, wormed her and gave her painkillers. We then left her to rest in a hutch on a heat pad overnight. We did not expect to find her alive the next morning.

Amazingly Rachel has bounced back and is recovering very well. She now weighs 300 grams and is continuing to make good progress towards a full recovery.
