Malty is a female adult hedgehog that was brought into the Centre on 18th November. A member of the public had seen her in their garden for a few nights and had become concerned about her condition. Upon arrival at the Centre it was clear to us that Malty (although weighing a healthy 1012 grams) was suffering from a severe case of mange. In fact the mange was so bad she could barely move her legs.
To ease her condition we bathed Malty and applied tea tree cream to the mange to loosen it. We also injected her with a drug to kill the mange mites and sprayed her with Aloe Vera spray to alleviate the itching and swelling. Malty was then placed in a hutch with a heat pad to recuperate overnight. Over the next few weeks we continued her treatment and as we routinely do, with all hedgehogs that pass through the centre we also wormed her.
Malty has responded very well to treatment and since the beginning of December has been slipping in and out of hibernation - her longest period of hibernation being 15 days, although she is currently awake at the moment! Malty will remain at the Centre until the spring when she will be released back into the wild near the area where she was found.
