Jenny was a very poorly female hoglet when she was brought into the Centre on 16th September last year. As well as being extremely small (she weighed only 222 grams) she was very lethargic and infested with ticks that were draining her of blood.
We immediately set to work on Jenny removing as many of the ticks as we could and starting her on a course of antibiotics. We also wormed her. We routinely worm all hedgehogs that come through the Centre but our tests did reveal that Jenny was heavily infested with worms - which explained her lack of weight.
Jenny responded well to treatment and she was later moved from a hutch into one of our outside rehabilitation pens. However she didn’t settle in well and began to lose weight. We therefore moved her back into a hutch for a little while longer.
Jenny is well on the road to recovery and now weighs 632 grams. She will remain at the Centre until the spring. When the weather is milder and she has gained enough weight Jenny will be released back into the wild near the area where she was found.
