Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre
HEDGEHOG STORIES: HENRIETTA
Henrietta was brought into the centre mid-afternoon on 20th December. She had been found out in the daytime (a clear sign that a hedgehog is unwell). She was very lethargic and dehydrated and was also infested with fleas. She weighed only 560 grams.

To treat the mange we injected Henrietta with a drug that kills the mange parasites, sprayed her with Aloe-Vera liquid to alleviate the swelling and itching caused by the mange and we applied tea tree cream on her wounds. As with most hedgehogs we treat we also gave her antibiotics and a course of worming treatment.

Henrietta has been a model patient and has responded very well to treatment. She has not hibernated (but hedgehogs do not actually need to hibernate they only do so when they cannot find sufficient food). She now weighs a very healthy 1,050 grams. We will be releasing her during the next month (weather permitting) after she has spent some time in a hutch at her release site being prepared for her return to the wild.
