On the 5th July two brothers walking home from school with their mother found Daniel, a young hoglet, wandering in the road by Oatlands Craft Centre. A little girl who had seen the boys with the baby hedgehog took off her jumper and gave it them to wrap Daniel in to keep him warm. The brothers then got their mother to turn around and walk with them and Daniel to the rescue centre, which is nearby.
When Daniel arrived at the centre he was very shaky on his legs. However after a nights rest in one of the recovery hutches at the centre he was much better. As a matter of routine Daniel spent his first 24 hours in isolation. During this time he was often heard crying. So the following day when all was okay with Daniel he was put with Maisy, another young hoglet at the centre, for company.
Daniel is now doing very well. When he was brought into the centre he weighed just 140 grams, his weight has now increased to 170 grams.
Daniel will remain at the centre for the next couple of months. During this time he will be trained to care for himself. He will then be released into a safe area.
