Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre
HEDGEHOG STORIES: BASIL
Basil is a juvenile hedgehog that was brought into the centre on 6th November 2005. He had been bitten by a dog and was screaming in pain from the deep piercing wound on his rear. He was in shock, dehydrated and cold. He weighed only 306 grams.

To minimise infection we immediately cleaned up his wound and started him on a course of antibiotics we also gave him painkillers. Later that day we called the vet to administer stronger painkillers. We then put him on a heat pad and let him settle for the night. The following day we took Basil to the vets to be x-rayed to check for any damage to his pelvis, thankfully there was none. Unfortunately Basil was not eating well and lost weight.

We have now wormed Basil and he has gradually put on weight, he now weighs 364 grams. Basil will remain with us over the winter whilst he recovers from his injury. When he is fully recovered we will release him back into the wild, this will probably early next year.
