| Ten points to watch for now (9/3/08) |
1. Yes, hedgehogs are now starting to come out of hibernation.
2. Often they will appear shaky or slow. Remember they have been asleep and have been a few months without food or water. They are desperate to find it quickly, and unfortunately often pay for this with their life as they slowly try to cross a road or as they slip into a pond or pool with no way out.
3. Please leave out a shallow bowl of water and some food such as scraps of cooked meat, broken peanuts or soft fruit.
4. If you see a hedgehog out during the day this always means something is wrong. They are nocturnal and should never be around during the daytime.
5. Hedgehogs won’t start breeding until April/May.
6. If we get a very cold snap of weather during March, some hedgehogs go back to sleep.
7. Please be careful before lighting a bonfire as they make good sleepover beds. Likewise with the compost heap - many hedgehogs end up on the end of a fork.
8. This is a good time to put nesting boxes hidden around the garden as hedgehogs look for new sleeping quarters each night.
9. If you find a poorly hog, quickly secure it before it runs away and keep it warm. A covered hot water bottle could save its life. If they get too cold their body shuts down.
10. Remember, a hedgehog is an excellent friend to have in your garden. They eat all the slugs, snails, earwigs, beetles, etc, but if you use slug pellets and spray pesticides you will kill them.
