Hedgehogs rest comfortably thanks to Network Insurance (6/6/07)
Hedgehog in shredded paper The centre would like to say a big “thank you” to Network Insurance who are now donating all their shredded paper to the centre to use as bedding.

Shredded paper is ideal bedding for the hedgehogs being cared for here at the centre. The bedding in a hedgehog’s hutch is changed every day and now that the centre is looking after so many hedgehogs (click here to see the figures) we can get through a lot of it!

Network Insurance has come to our assistance by proving us with a steady source of shredding and we are very grateful to them.

Open Day - A huge success (14/05/07)
Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre logo Yesterday’s Open Day (Sun 13th May) at the Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre was a huge success. It was our busiest Open Day to date attracting more visitors than ever before. Even the weather stayed fine for us!

It was a great day and everyone who attended enjoyed learning more about hedgehogs and the work of the centre.

As well as educating people our annual open days also raise much-needed funds to help with the running costs of the centre. (Click here to see what we spend your donations on).

Our thanks to everyone who came to our Open Day and to the team of volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

We are always looking for more volunteers (especially as we are becoming more well known and busy), if you think you can help - click here for more details.

New walkway thanks to CEPS (10/05/07)
Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre logo The Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre now has a proper walkway for visitors, which can be used all year-round, thanks to CEPS (Guernsey’s Community & Environmental Projects Scheme).

CEPS is a scheme that was set up in 2004 by States Works and the States of Guernsey: Social Security Department.

The scheme is a way of helping unemployed people back into work by giving them new skills and building their confidence. Workers employed on the scheme carry out a variety of projects that are of benefit to the community or environment. So far CEPS has provided work or training opportunities for more than 200 people.

The CEPS workers helped lay weed suppressant material then created a path across a large grassed area made from donated woodchips.

Our thanks to the CEPS team and the other companies that helped with this project by providing free materials.

For more details regarding CEPS please contact: Nigel Dorey, General Manager, States Works - Tel. 01481 246263.

Spring alert - how to help hedgehogs (11/04/07)
British Hedgehog Preservation Society logo Spring has well and truly arrived, birds can be seen gathering materials for nests, trees are blossoming and lambs are frolicking in the fields. A less obvious visitor is the nocturnal hedgehog, but they too are busy now replenishing fat reserves that are depleted from their long hibernation and looking for a mate.

It is important that people spring cleaning their gardens keep an eye open for possible nests and try not to disturb them. Check long grasses and hedges very carefully before using mowers and other garden machinery.

Another way to help is to provide some food and water. You can offer meat based pet food or moistened unsweetened muesli, not bread and milk as traditionally suggested as this can upset their tummies. (Click here for more information about feeding hedgehogs).

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society had hedgehog babies (hoglets) reported as early as 16th March this year. It is asking people to be extra diligent as if a mother with young is disturbed she may attack or even kill her babies. The advice if a nest of young is disturbed is to replace the nest immediately and call the centre on 07781 144250 (if you are in Guernsey) or the society on 01584 890 801 for urgent advice.

Fay Vass Chief Executive of the Society said “It appears hedgehog numbers may be in decline so it is more important now than ever before to do all we can to help the UK’s only spiky mammal. I read in ‘The New Hedgehog Book’ by Dr Pat Morris that the first hedgehogs probably appeared over 15 million years ago! It is up to us to help them prosper in our modern world.”

For more information on hedgehogs, how to build a hedgehog home, and how to help them in your garden see www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk or send an A5 sae for free leaflets to BHPS Springtime, Hedgehog House, Dhustone, Ludlow, SY8 3PL.

Time to wake up! (07/03/07)
British Hedgehog Preservation Society logo At this time of year hedgehogs are waking up from their winter hibernation. The warmth creeps into their nests and lets them know that spring is here and it is time to emerge and start looking for food and a mate.

Their fat reserves have been depleted so it is helpful to offer them a meat based pet food and fresh water to build them up again. (Click here for more information about feeding hedgehogs). Food can be placed in a feeding station to prevent cats from stealing it. A feeding station is simple to make, get a plastic storage box and cut a 5” square hole in one of the short sides. Put the food under the upturned box and put a weight on the top of the box. An obstruction (such as a brick) 5” in front of the entrance will stop cats lying down and hooking the food out with their paws.

If hedgehogs are wobbling as they walk or ‘sunbathing’ they are probably hypothermic. In these cases use gloved hands to pick the hedgehog up and pop it into a box with an old towel or t-shirt. Then call the centre on 07781 144250 (if you are in Guernsey) or call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890 801 for further advice and to get the number of a hedgehog carer in your area.

Fay Vass, Chief Executive of the Society said “Watch out for hedgehogs in hedgerows, bonfire piles and compost heaps when spring cleaning the garden and using garden machinery.”

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society website www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk has information and advice on how to help hedgehogs in the garden, as well as a selection of information leaflets. Uist Hedgehog cull ends! (20/02/07)
British Hedgehog Preservation Society logo The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are thrilled that the cull of hedgehogs on the island of Uist has at last been halted. The society and its partners in Uist Hedgehog Rescue have battled against the decision to kill the spiky mammals since the cull began in 2003, and for the last four years have carried out an annual rescue of hedgehogs, releasing them on the Scottish mainland to live out their days in peace.

Fay Vass, Chief Executive of the society said “We could not be more pleased that finally this unnecessary cull has ended. We have fought long and hard to prove that relocation is the best option, and at last this been acknowledged.”

“We have offered our expertise and actual experience of rescuing hedgehogs from these islands to help the Uist Wader Project relocate the remaining hedgehogs to mainland Scotland.”

For interviews, further information or photographs please contact BHPS Chief Executive Fay Vass on 01584 890 801 (07736 466 963).
