A problem that we see all too often at the Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre is mange. This is an infection by a mite called Sarcoptes, which burrows under the skin - initially this makes the hedgehog very itchy, then as the disease progresses, the skin on the head and around the edge of the bristles (the skirt) becomes thickened and infected (and quite smelly!). The hedgehog does not eat properly, loses weight, and if not found and treated, will die.
It is important to spot and treat mange as early as possible. If you suspect a hedgehog might have mange, secure it, then contact the centre immediately.
